Külmpaneelid, also known as cold panels, are a passive cooling technology used to regulate the temperature of indoor spaces. They function by absorbing heat from the environment, typically through convection and radiation, and then dissipating this heat elsewhere. Unlike active cooling systems that use refrigerants and compressors, külmpaneelid rely on the thermal properties of materials and the natural movement of air.

These panels are often integrated into building structures, such as ceilings or walls, and can be filled with water or a phase-change material (PCM). Water-filled panels work by circulating chilled water through them, which then absorbs heat from the room. PCMs are designed to melt at a specific temperature, absorbing a significant amount of heat during their phase transition. When the ambient temperature drops, the PCM solidifies again, releasing the stored heat.

The primary advantage of külmpaneelid is their energy efficiency and low operational cost. They consume significantly less electricity compared to traditional air conditioning systems, making them an environmentally friendly option. They also operate silently and do not require complex maintenance. However, their cooling capacity is generally lower than active systems, and they are most effective in environments with moderate cooling demands or as a supplementary cooling solution. Installation can also be more complex as they are often built into the building's structure.
