Könyvolvasó, commonly translated as e-reader or digital reader, is an electronic device designed specifically for reading digital books and other digital content. Unlike a tablet or smartphone, an e-reader's primary purpose is to mimic the experience of reading a physical book, often featuring a display technology that reduces eye strain.

The most distinctive feature of many e-readers is their electronic ink (e-ink) or electrophoretic display. This type of screen uses tiny black and white particles to create an image that closely resembles printed paper. E-ink displays are highly readable in direct sunlight, consume very little power, and do not produce the backlight that can cause fatigue with traditional screens. This results in a more comfortable reading experience for extended periods.

E-readers typically have a battery life measured in weeks, not hours, due to the low power consumption of e-ink screens. They are lightweight and portable, capable of storing thousands of books, making them ideal for travel or for individuals who prefer to carry a large library with them. Users can purchase and download e-books directly to the device, often through built-in Wi-Fi or USB connections. Many e-readers also offer features like adjustable font sizes, customizable fonts, built-in dictionaries, and note-taking capabilities. While some e-readers are monochrome, newer models increasingly offer color e-ink displays, expanding their capabilities to include magazines, comics, and other visually rich content.
