Kõvadusproovid, commonly referred to as hardness tests, are a crucial group of mechanical tests used to determine the resistance of a material to localized plastic deformation. This deformation is typically caused by indentation or scratching. By measuring how a material withstands these forces, engineers and scientists can gain insights into its strength, wear resistance, and suitability for various applications.

Several standardized methods exist for conducting hardness tests, each employing different indenter shapes and load applications. The Brinell hardness test uses a hardened steel ball as the indenter, and the hardness value is calculated based on the diameter of the indentation left after applying a specific load. The Rockwell hardness test, on the other hand, utilizes a cone or a ball indenter and measures the depth of penetration after applying a minor and then a major load. This provides a direct reading of hardness on a specific scale. Vickers hardness testing employs a diamond pyramid indenter, and the hardness is calculated from the diagonal length of the resulting indentation. This method is particularly useful for a wide range of materials, including thin layers. Knoop hardness testing, similar to Vickers, also uses a diamond indenter but with a rhombic pyramid shape, creating a shallower and longer indentation, making it suitable for brittle materials and thin films.

The results of hardness tests are often expressed in specific units, such as Brinell Hardness Number (HB), Rockwell Hardness Number (HR), Vickers Hardness Number (HV), or Knoop Hardness Number (HK). These values are valuable for material selection, quality control, and understanding the performance characteristics of metals, ceramics, polymers, and other materials in engineering and manufacturing processes.
