kézfejen

Kézfej is the term used in Hungarian to refer to the back of the hand, i.e., the dorsal aspect as opposed to the palm (tenyér). The locative form kézfejen is used to indicate a position on the back of the hand, for example in medical descriptions or everyday speech.

Anatomy and region

The kézfej extends from the wrist (csukló) to the knuckles, covering the dorsal surfaces of the metacarpal bones and the proximal phalanges. Its surface contains the extensor tendons that control finger extension, a network of superficial veins, and relatively thin skin compared with the palm. The palm side contains the thenar and hypothenar eminences and thicker padding, while the kézfej itself is less padded and more exposed to surface injuries.

Function

The kézfej participates in the coordination of finger movements through its extensor tendons and joints. While the palm provides grip and tactile pad, the back of the hand offers structural support and protection for tendons and vessels during hand movements. Its relatively thin soft tissue makes it more susceptible to cuts, abrasions, and superficial injuries.

Clinical relevance

In clinical contexts, lesions on the kézfejen may include lacerations, contusions, or tendon injuries affecting hand extension. Dermatological conditions such as dermatitis or eczema can appear on the dorsal surface. Descriptions often use kézfejen to specify location, as in “sérülés a kézfejen” (injury on the back of the hand).
