Käänteisongelmat, known in English as inverse problems, are a class of mathematical problems where the goal is to determine the causes of observed data. This is in contrast to forward problems, where the causes are known and the effects are to be predicted. In essence, inverse problems seek to infer the unknown parameters or properties of a system from measurements of its output or behavior.

The general formulation of an inverse problem involves an operator F that maps an unknown cause x to an observed effect y, so y = F(x). The inverse problem then aims to find x given y and knowledge of F. For example, in medical imaging, a forward problem might be simulating how X-rays pass through a known anatomical structure. The corresponding inverse problem would be to reconstruct the internal structure of the body from the measured X-ray attenuation data.

Inverse problems are notoriously challenging. They are often ill-posed, meaning that a solution may not exist, may not be unique, or may be highly sensitive to small errors in the data. This sensitivity arises because the mapping from cause to effect in many physical systems involves some form of averaging or smoothing, which can lose information about the original cause. Therefore, solving inverse problems typically requires regularization techniques to stabilize the solution and incorporate prior knowledge about the expected properties of the cause.

Applications of inverse problems are widespread across science and engineering, including seismology (determining Earth's interior structure from seismic waves), geophysics (locating underground resources), acoustics (identifying sound sources), fluid dynamics (inferring flow properties), and machine learning (training models from data). The development of efficient and robust methods for solving inverse problems remains an active area of research.
