Käsikäigukastides, commonly known as manual transmissions or stick shifts, are a type of gearbox used in vehicles that allows the driver to select different gear ratios. This selection is made by the driver operating a gear lever and a clutch pedal. The clutch pedal disengages the engine from the transmission, allowing the driver to shift gears, and then re-engages it to transmit power to the wheels.

The primary function of a gearbox is to allow the engine to operate within its optimal power band across a range of vehicle speeds. Lower gears provide higher torque for starting from a stop and climbing hills, while higher gears allow for lower engine RPMs at cruising speeds, improving fuel efficiency and reducing noise.

A manual transmission typically consists of a set of gears of different sizes mounted on shafts. When the driver selects a gear, internal components called synchronizers match the speed of the input shaft (connected to the engine via the clutch) with the speed of the output shaft (connected to the wheels). This synchronization prevents grinding and allows for smooth gear changes.

Historically, manual transmissions were the standard in most vehicles. However, in recent decades, automatic transmissions have become increasingly popular due to their convenience, especially in heavy traffic. Despite this, manual transmissions remain a preferred choice for some drivers who enjoy a more engaging driving experience and better control over the vehicle. They are often found in sports cars and performance-oriented vehicles.
