Käigukastil, commonly referred to as a gearbox in English, is a crucial mechanical component found in vehicles and various machinery. Its primary function is to transmit power from a source, such as an engine, to an output device, like the wheels of a car, while altering the speed and torque. This is achieved through a system of gears of different sizes that mesh and rotate together.

The concept of a käigukastil allows for a wider operating range for the engine. At low speeds, such as when starting from a standstill or climbing a steep incline, the käigukastil selects a lower gear. This provides more torque to the wheels, enabling the vehicle to move more easily, but at a reduced speed. Conversely, at higher speeds, a higher gear is engaged. This allows the engine to operate at a more efficient, lower RPM range, while the wheels turn faster.

There are several types of käigukastil. Manual gearboxes require the driver to manually select gears using a clutch pedal and gear shifter. Automatic gearboxes, on the other hand, change gears automatically based on vehicle speed, engine load, and other factors, without driver intervention. Continuously Variable Transmissions (CVTs) offer a seamless range of gear ratios, rather than distinct steps. The design and complexity of a käigukastil vary significantly depending on its application and the required performance characteristics. Regular maintenance, including fluid changes, is essential for the longevity and proper functioning of any käigukastil.
