Kädellisiin is the Finnish word for primates. Primates are a diverse order of mammals that includes lemurs, lorises, tarsiers, monkeys, and apes. They are characterized by several shared traits, though these vary in degree across the order. Key features often include large relative brain size, forward-facing eyes providing binocular vision, and grasping hands and feet with opposable thumbs (or halluces, in some cases). The primate order is broadly divided into two suborders: Strepsirrhini (or prosimians) and Haplorhini (or anthropoids). Strepsirrhini include lemurs, lorises, and galagos, which generally retain more primitive characteristics such as a moist nose (rhinarium) and a less complex brain. Haplorhini encompass tarsiers, monkeys, and apes, all of whom have dry noses and more developed brains. Monkeys are further divided into New World monkeys (Platyrrhini) and Old World monkeys (Cercopithecidae). Apes (Hominoidea) include gibbons, orangutans, gorillas, chimpanzees, bonobos, and humans.

Primates are found in a variety of habitats, primarily tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas, Africa, and Asia. Their diets are also varied, ranging from insectivorous and frugivorous to folivorous and omnivorous. Many primate species are social, living in complex group structures with intricate communication systems.
