Kyrkogårdarna (the cemeteries) are burial grounds used for interment and remembrance. The Swedish term combines kyrka “church” and gård “yard,” traditionally referring to burial grounds adjacent to a church. In many towns today, kyrkogårdarna are municipal or privately run, located outside or around urban centers.

Historically, burials took place in churchyards directly around churches. With urban growth, many countries established separate cemetery grounds in the 19th century. In Sweden, this led to the creation of public cemeteries managed by municipalities, gradually supplanting older churchyard burials and enabling more standardized record-keeping and administration.

Design and features commonly include gravestones, urn monuments, mausoleums, chapels, and landscaped grounds with paths and benches. Maintenance is typically the responsibility of cemetery administrations or local authorities, and burial plots are usually leased or sold for a defined period. Cremation facilities and columbaria are common additions in modern kyrkogårdarna.

Cultural practices surrounding kyrkogårdarna include remembrance on holidays such as Alla helgons dag (All Saints’ Day) when families visit graves, light candles, and lay flowers. Increasing attention to sustainability has led to green or natural burial options in some cemeteries.
