The format is defined by an open specification that outlines a binary container with a header, a block for pixel data, and a dedicated XMP metadata section. Image data can be stored with optional lossless or lossy compression, and the container is intended to accommodate common color spaces such as sRGB and wider gamuts, along with embedded color profiles. Metadata is stored in a dedicated XMP block and can follow established schemas for authorship, rights, location, and technical camera information. Because metadata is embedded, kuvatiedostoxmp aims to simplify archival workflows by reducing reliance on sidecar files.
