Kuvatiedostoxmp is a proposed image file format designed to combine raster image data with Extensible Metadata Platform (XMP) metadata within a single container. The term blends Finnish “kuvatiedosto” (image file) with “xmp,” signaling the integration of standardized metadata into the image file itself.

Overview and design

The format is defined by an open specification that outlines a binary container with a header, a block for pixel data, and a dedicated XMP metadata section. Image data can be stored with optional lossless or lossy compression, and the container is intended to accommodate common color spaces such as sRGB and wider gamuts, along with embedded color profiles. Metadata is stored in a dedicated XMP block and can follow established schemas for authorship, rights, location, and technical camera information. Because metadata is embedded, kuvatiedostoxmp aims to simplify archival workflows by reducing reliance on sidecar files.

Interoperability and usage

Because the metadata uses standard XMP, it can be read and edited with existing XMP tools and libraries, enabling extraction, validation, or rewriting without decoupling metadata from the image. The specification supports both internal metadata blocks and references to external resources when needed, and it aligns with commonly used schemas such as Dublin Core, IPTC, and EXIF where appropriate.

Status and adoption

As of publication, kuvatiedostoxmp remains experimental and is not widely adopted in mainstream software. Some research projects and niche tooling have implemented experimental readers or writers, but major photo editors and consumer-grade workflows typically rely on established formats. Prospective users should weigh the benefits of embedded metadata against current interoperability and tool support.
