Kuumereaktio, also known as fever reaction or febrile reaction, refers to a physiological response in the body characterized by an elevated body temperature. This rise in temperature is a defense mechanism, often triggered by infections or inflammation. When the body detects pathogens like bacteria or viruses, or internal damage, it initiates a process that leads to a higher core body temperature. This elevated temperature can inhibit the growth and replication of some microorganisms and may also enhance the function of certain immune cells, making it harder for invaders to survive.

The hypothalamus, a region in the brain, acts as the body's thermostat. During a kuumereaktio, the hypothalamus resets its target temperature to a higher level, often in response to chemical signals called pyrogens released by immune cells or the pathogens themselves. The body then activates mechanisms to generate and conserve heat, such as shivering (involuntary muscle contractions) and vasoconstriction (narrowing of blood vessels in the skin).

Symptoms associated with a kuumereaktio can vary but commonly include feeling cold or chills, shivering, sweating, headaches, muscle aches, and a general feeling of malaise. While a moderate fever can be beneficial in fighting off illness, very high fevers can be dangerous and may require medical attention. The underlying cause of the fever should always be investigated to ensure appropriate treatment.
