Kunstlikule is a Dutch term for a genetically engineered citrus hybrid that combines traits of the lemon (Citrus limon) and the lime (Citrus aurantiifolia). Developed in the early 1980s by the Dutch Institute for Agricultural Research, the plant was created by selective breeding techniques and early gene‑editing methods. The name derives from the Dutch words „kunst“ meaning “artificial” and „likule“, a colloquial form of „limoen/limoen‑achtig vrucht“.

The kunstlikule has a bright yellow peel, a slightly flattened shape, and a citrus aroma that lies between lemon and lime. Its fruit contains a balanced amount of citric acid and essential oils, resulting in a sharp yet less bitter flavor. The hybrid is self‑pollinating, has a high yield of 30–35 kilograms per tree per year, and is tolerant to drought and moderate frost. Because of its resistance to several common citrus diseases, it has been adopted in greenhouse production in the Netherlands and Belgium.

Commercial uses of the kunstlikule include culinary applications where a nuanced citrus flavor is desired, as well as the production of citrus‑based fragrances. Recent studies have examined its seedlessness and potential for export to temperate regions of North America and Asia. While the plant remains relatively rare outside of research cultivations, it has influenced breeding programs that aim to combine taste, resilience, and yield in citrus crops.
