Cultivation is the act of promoting the growth of organisms or the development of landscapes, crops, and ideas. While commonly associated with agriculture, the term covers broad practices and contexts in which growth is fostered. The plural cultivations may refer to multiple practices or domains in which cultivation occurs.

In farming, cultivation involves land preparation, sowing or planting, irrigation, fertilization, pest and weed management, and harvest and post-harvest handling. Sustainable approaches include conservation tillage, crop rotation, soil conservation, integrated pest management, and precision agriculture using sensors and data.

In horticulture, cultivation focuses on fruits, vegetables, and ornamental plants. It includes nursery propagation, pruning, grafting, training, and soil or substrate management, as well as climate control in greenhouses.

In microbiology, cultivation is the growth of microorganisms on defined media under controlled conditions. It requires sterile technique, appropriate incubation temperatures, and sometimes oxygen controls or special atmospheres. Applications include basic research, clinical diagnostics, and industrial fermentation.

In philosophy and ethics, cultivation refers to the development of virtue, character, or intellect. Traditions such as Confucianism and Aristotelian ethics describe cultivation as lifelong, cumulative practice shaped by education, habit, and social norms.

Cultivation also denotes the fostering of social relationships, cultural practices, and knowledge within communities. It can involve education, arts, language, and shared norms aimed at collective development.
