Kuivasilmäoireita, commonly known as dry eye symptoms, refers to a group of conditions characterized by insufficient tear production or poor tear quality, leading to discomfort and potential vision problems. The eyes require a stable tear film to remain lubricated, protected, and clear. When this film is compromised, individuals may experience a range of symptoms.

Common symptoms include a gritty or sandy sensation in the eyes, a burning or stinging feeling, redness, and a feeling of something being stuck in the eye. Some individuals may also experience blurred vision, particularly during prolonged visual tasks like reading or computer use, which often improves with blinking. Paradoxically, some people with dry eyes may find their eyes water excessively; this is an overproduction of reflex tears in response to irritation, which are often not as effective as normal tears.

Several factors can contribute to dry eye symptoms. Age is a significant factor, as tear production naturally decreases with time. Environmental conditions, such as dry air, wind, smoke, and air conditioning, can exacerbate symptoms. Prolonged use of screens, certain medications (like antihistamines or decongestants), and medical conditions (such as Sjogren's syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, or thyroid disorders) can also play a role.

Diagnosis typically involves a review of medical history and a physical examination of the eyes, often including tests to measure tear production and assess tear film stability. Treatment aims to alleviate symptoms and improve tear film function, and can include artificial tears, prescription eye drops, lifestyle modifications, and addressing underlying causes.
