Instead, they manage human waste through drying, composting, or incineration. The primary goal of a kuivakäymälä is to treat waste onsite, reducing the need for extensive water infrastructure and wastewater treatment plants.

There are several designs of kuivakäymälät. One common type involves separating liquids and solids. The solids are typically covered with a carbon-rich material, such as sawdust, peat, or coconut fiber, to absorb moisture and reduce odor. Over time, the solids can decompose, eventually becoming a nutrient-rich compost. Liquid waste is collected separately and can be diluted and used as fertilizer or allowed to evaporate.

Another type is a self-contained composting toilet, where both liquids and solids are processed within the unit. These often have a ventilation system to aid in decomposition and odor control. Incinerating toilets, a less common but more advanced type, use high heat to burn waste into ash.
