Krummholz, from the German for crooked wood, is a growth form of stunted, wind-pruned trees and shrubs that occupies subalpine and alpine zones at or near the timberline. Plants exhibit twisted trunks, contorted branches, and a generally gnarled appearance because of repeated physical damage from wind, cold, and desiccating conditions over many years.

Formation: In exposed high-elevation environments, harsh winter winds, high solar radiation, and snow can damage or kill apical shoots. New growth tends to occur low on the stem or at ground level, and shoots are repeatedly damaged, preventing normal vertical growth. Over time, individuals assume a low, irregular, wind-swept silhouette that may resemble a dense shrub or a prostrate, multi-stem form.

Distribution and species: Krummholz is reported in mountain ranges across Europe and North America, including the Alps, Cascades, and Rocky Mountains. Conifers predominate, with common forms arising from spruces (for example Picea), firs (Abies), and pines (Pinus), notably Pinus mugo in the European Alps. The precise species vary by region, but the characteristic wind-bent habit persists.

Ecology and significance: Krummholz marks the transition between forest and tundra, helping stabilize soils and offering microhabitats for lichens, mosses, and small invertebrates. Changes in climate may shift timberlines; some krummholz stands are observed to advance upslope or decline as conditions become less suitable, altering alpine ecosystem structure.
