It is renowned for its enormous size and the foul odor it emits when in bloom. The plant can grow up to 3 meters in height and has large, dark green leaves that can reach up to 1.5 meters in length. The flower itself is a large, white bract that can grow up to 1 meter in diameter, resembling a giant, white, star-shaped umbrella.

The kroppsegen is a parasitic plant, deriving its nutrients from the roots of other plants. It has a unique life cycle, with a dormant phase that can last for up to 10 years, followed by a rapid growth phase that can take just a few months. During this growth phase, the plant produces a strong, putrid smell that can be detected from several meters away, attracting carrion-eating insects that help in pollination.

The kroppsegen is a critically endangered species due to habitat loss and overcollection for the horticultural trade. Conservation efforts are underway to protect its natural habitat and ensure its survival for future generations. Despite its challenging nature, the kroppsegen remains a symbol of the unique and often overlooked biodiversity found in the world's rainforests.
