Krajoznawcz is not a widely used standalone term in Polish. It is typically seen as the stem of the adjective krajoznawczy, meaning “relating to krajoznawstwo.” The related noun krajoznawstwo denotes the study and appreciation of a country’s geography, landscapes, cultural heritage and tourist resources. A person engaged in this activity is a krajoznawca, a regionalist or krajoznawca-expert.

Krajoznawstwo is a field or movement focused on systematic and informal knowledge of regions. It encompasses geography, history, ethnography, natural scenery, and the tourist potential of places. Practitioners aim to observe, document, and promote regional understanding, often producing guides, maps, photographs, and written accounts.

History of krajoznawstwo in Poland traces to the late 19th and early 20th centuries, amid national revival and expanding tourism. Organizations such as Polskie Towarzystwo Krajoznawcze (PTTK), founded in 1906, supported regional exploration, publishing guides and notes. Activities and terminology commonly associated with krajoznawstwo include field trips, collecting regional data, photography, travelogues, and inventories of landmarks. While closely related to academic geography, krajoznawstwo has historically functioned as a broader citizen science and hobby, with clubs, competitions, and publications that disseminate regional knowledge.

In contemporary usage, the term krajoznawcz is rarely used; krajoznawstwo remains the standard label. The field persists in schools, museums, and volunteer societies and continues to adapt to digital media, online maps, and regional documentation.
