Kraftaggregat, often translated as power generator or generator set, is a device that converts mechanical energy into electrical energy. It typically comprises a prime mover (an internal-combustion engine or turbine) coupled to an electrical generator (alternator). The generator produces alternating current with a voltage and frequency controlled by the engine speed and an electronic regulator.

Kraftaggregat can be portable or stationary and is rated by electrical output, commonly expressed in kilowatts (kW) and kilovolt-amperes (kVA). Two common operation modes are standby power, for temporary outages, and prime power, for continuous or variable-duty use with limited annual operating hours. Units may be powered by diesel, petrol/gasoline, natural gas, or propane, and they may run on embedded engines or as multi-fuel designs.

Key components include the engine, the alternator, a control panel, fuel system, cooling and exhaust systems, lubrication, and a starting system. Many units are housed in a sound-attenuating enclosure and include fuel tanks and connection points for power distribution.

Typical applications include backup power for homes and businesses, telecommunications, data centers, hospitals, construction sites, and remote locations. For operation, proper ventilation to avoid carbon monoxide exposure, correct grounding, and adherence to load limits are essential. Regular maintenance such as oil changes, filter replacements, battery checks, and periodic load testing helps ensure reliability.

Regulatory and environmental aspects include emissions standards and safety norms; modern kraftaggregat often feature electronic controls, remote monitoring, and compliance with local regulations.
