Kouvola is a city and municipality in Finland, located in the region of Kymenlaakso in southern Finland. It is situated approximately 135 kilometers northeast of Helsinki. Kouvola is known for its significant role as a railway junction, making it an important transportation hub. The city was formed through a series of municipal mergers, with the most recent and significant being the creation of the new city of Kouvola in 2009, combining the former municipality of Kouvola with six surrounding municipalities: Anjalankoski, Elimäki, Haankylä, Iitti, Kausala, and Valkeala. This merger significantly expanded the city's territory and population.
