Kouluratsastus, known in English as dressage, is a competitive equestrian sport that involves a rider guiding a horse through a series of predetermined movements. The goal of kouluratsastus is to demonstrate the horse's obedience, suppleness, balance, and graceful athleticism, as well as the harmony and connection between horse and rider. Judges evaluate the performance based on the precision of the movements, the horse's impulsion and collection, the rider's position and aids, and the overall impression of elegance and partnership.

The sport originated from the classical equitation principles developed by ancient Greek cavalry officers and was formalized in Europe centuries later. Modern kouluratsastus competitions range from basic levels, focusing on simple gaits and figures, to the highest international level, known as Grand Prix, which features complex movements like pirouettes, flying changes, and piaffe. Riders execute these movements in a specific arena, usually 20 meters by 60 meters, following a test pattern.

Kouluratsastus requires extensive training for both horse and rider. The horse must be trained to respond to subtle cues from the rider, often through the legs, seat, and reins. The rider, in turn, must develop a deep understanding of the horse's anatomy and biomechanics, as well as precise timing and control of their own body. It is considered one of the most demanding equestrian disciplines, emphasizing finesse and communication over raw power.
