Koolikeskkondi is an Estonian term that refers to the environment in which education takes place, encompassing the physical, digital, social, and organizational dimensions that shape learning and development. The concept is often described through four interrelated components: the physical environment (classrooms, libraries, laboratories, safety, accessibility, lighting, acoustics, air quality); the digital environment (learning platforms, devices, internet access, cybersecurity, privacy); the social environment (school climate, relationships, expectations, inclusivity, anti-bullying measures); and the organizational environment (policies, curriculum, assessment practices, governance).

A positive koolikeskkond supports student engagement, motivation, achievement, and well-being; conversely, a poor environment can hinder learning, exacerbate inequities, and affect mental health. Researchers study school climate and environment as predictors of educational outcomes, with evidence showing that inclusive, safe, and well-supported environments tend to improve performance and reduce disparities among student groups.

Efforts to improve koolikeskkondi include involving students and staff in decision-making, professional development for teachers on inclusive pedagogy, ensuring physical accessibility, implementing restorative practices, and strengthening digital literacy and access. Data from climate surveys and performance metrics are used to guide interventions and resource allocation.

The concept varies across educational levels and contexts, reflecting differences in resources, governance, and cultural expectations. In Estonia and other countries, policies commonly emphasize student well-being, equity, and safe online spaces as core elements of a healthy koolikeskkond.
