Kontúzió is the medical term for a bruise. It is a type of traumatic injury that occurs when small blood vessels (capillaries) near the skin's surface are damaged, usually due to a direct blow or impact. This damage causes blood to leak out of the vessels and into the surrounding tissues, resulting in the characteristic discoloration of the skin.

The appearance of a bruise can vary depending on its age and severity. Initially, a bruise may appear reddish or purplish. Over time, as the body breaks down the blood, the color changes to greenish, yellowish, or brownish before eventually fading. Bruises are typically accompanied by pain, swelling, and tenderness at the site of injury. The severity of a kontúzió can range from a minor discoloration to a more significant hematoma, which is a larger collection of blood outside of a blood vessel.

Kontúzió can occur anywhere on the body and is a common injury resulting from falls, sports accidents, or everyday bumps and knocks. While most bruises are minor and heal on their own within a few days or weeks, severe or recurrent bruising, especially without a clear cause, may warrant medical attention to rule out underlying medical conditions such as bleeding disorders or certain medications. Treatment for a typical kontúzió focuses on managing pain and swelling, often with RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation).
