A kontrollserver, or control server, is a central server that coordinates and issues commands to a set of client devices or software agents. In many contexts it is synonymous with a command-and-control (C2) server, a term often used in reference to networks where devices are commanded remotely.

In legitimate IT and industrial environments, kontrollservers manage remote monitoring, configuration updates, task automation, and data collection from large fleets of endpoints or devices. They enable administrators to push patches, collect telemetry, and orchestrate complex workflows across distributed systems. Architectures vary, ranging from centralized models with a single control point to decentralized or multi-tier designs that use proxies, gateways, or peer-to-peer communication to improve resilience.

Communication with agents typically relies on standard or custom protocols over networks, including HTTP/S, MQTT, or WebSocket, often secured with encryption and authentication. Agents may operate behind firewalls and refer to the kontrollserver for instructions, reporting back results and status information.

Use of kontrollservers spans legitimate uses—enterprise remote management, software distribution, and fleet monitoring—as well as malicious applications, such as botnets or ransomware operations, where control servers coordinate infected devices. Due to the potential for abuse, securing kontrollservers is critical. Safeguards include strong authentication, encryption, access controls, network segmentation, monitoring and anomaly detection, secure software supply chains, and regular audits.
