The concept centers on creating deliberate differences within a shot or sequence, such as contrasts between light and dark, color, texture, or geometric form, so that elements stand out from one another within the frame.

Techniques include high-contrast lighting (low-key lighting), color contrast using complementary hues, juxtaposition of bright and shadowed areas, and the use of negative space to amplify the difference between subjects and their surroundings.
