Kontrabassklarinetti, or the contrabass clarinet, is a large, low-pitched woodwind instrument in the clarinet family. It is typically built in B♭ (occasionally in C) and sounds about one octave below the bass clarinet, enabling the instrument to cover the low end of the family. Its deep, resonant timbre provides sustained, sonorous lines in wind ensembles and orchestras.

In construction and design, the contrabass clarinet uses a long bore, a large body, and a flared bell. It can be straight or gently curved and employs the single-reed mouthpiece and keywork typical of modern clarinets, usually in a Boehm-type system. Some vintage or regional models may use related fingering systems. The instrument requires substantial breath support and a secure embouchure, and players often use a neck strap or harness for stability.

Range and repertoire: It supplies the lowest notes of the clarinet family and supports bass lines in larger ensembles. Because of its size and specialized demand, it remains relatively rare; composers of 20th- and 21st-century repertoire sometimes exploit its low-end color and unique resonance in contemporary works.

History: The contrabass clarinet emerged in the 19th century as instrument makers expanded the clarinet family. Although less common than other clarinets, it has maintained a niche role in orchestras, wind ensembles, and experimental music.
