The underlying concept, conservatism, is an ideology that prioritizes tradition, social stability, and continuity, with a cautious approach to change. Proponents argue that inherited institutions—such as the rule of law, private property, family structures, and cultural or religious traditions—provide legitimacy and resilience.

In economic and political terms, conservatism favors a market-based economy tempered by prudent regulation, fiscal responsibility, and a social safety net. It emphasizes gradual reform, empirical policymaking, and respect for established institutions and authorities.
