Konduktorn is a Swedish term for a staff member on public transportation whose primary responsibilities are selling or validating tickets, inspecting fares, and assisting passengers on board. The position is most closely associated with railway service, but has historically also applied to trams and, in some systems, buses. In modern practice, title and duties vary by operator; common equivalents include tågvärd (train attendant) and biljettkontrollant (ticket inspector).

Typical duties include selling tickets at the point of boarding or validating electronic tickets, checking passengers’ tickets during the journey, and collecting fares for routes not covered by automatic systems. Conductors also provide information such as timetable changes, platform directions, and accessibility assistance. They may announce stops, enforce safety rules, help with boarding and alighting, and coordinate with crew in emergencies. Training covers safety procedures, first aid, and conflict de-escalation, and staff wear a distinctive uniform or identification.

History and usage: The role developed with the expansion of rail networks in the 19th and early 20th centuries. In Sweden and other countries, on-board staff historically performed multiple functions including ticket sales, fare enforcement, and passenger assistance. With the advent of automated ticketing and centralized operations, the emphasis on manual fare collection has declined, and many operators use ticket inspectors who specialize in validation or have replaced the role with digital systems. Some networks retain conductors on longer routes or in regional services.
