Komposittmaterialer er materialer laget av to eller flere constituent materialer with significantly different physical or chemical properties which remain separate and distinct at the macroscopic or microscopic level within the finished structure. The goal is to create a material with characteristics different from the individual components. Typically, one component is a reinforcement or filler material, often in the form of fibers or particles, embedded within another component called the matrix.

The matrix material holds the reinforcement in place and transfers stress to it. Common matrix materials include polymers, ceramics, and metals. The reinforcement provides the desired mechanical properties such as increased strength, stiffness, or toughness. Examples of reinforcement materials include carbon fibers, glass fibers, and aramid fibers. The combination of matrix and reinforcement results in a material with superior performance characteristics compared to either constituent alone.
