Komplementar is a term found in several languages to describe the relationship of complementarity, where two or more elements complete, balance, or enhance one another. The word is tied to the notion of something that completes what is missing, and its spelling varies by language, appearing as komplementar, komplementär, or complementar in different contexts.

In mathematics and logic, the complement of a set A with respect to a universal set U consists of all elements not in A. This idea extends to logic, where the negation of a proposition serves as its complement in boolean terms. In probability, the complement of an event A is the event that A does not occur, with P(A^c) = 1 − P(A).

In computer science, complement operations are common: the bitwise NOT flips every bit in a binary value. The concept also appears in the notion of two’s complement, which is used to represent signed integers in many computing systems.

In biology and genetics, genetic complementation describes a situation where two different mutations, each defective in separate genes, produce a wild-type phenotype when combined in a diploid organism. This demonstrates that the mutations affect different genes and that the genes can compensate for each other functionally.

In color theory and design, complementary colors are pairs opposite on the color wheel and provide high contrast when used together. The concept of complementarity also appears in chemistry and other domains to denote mutually reinforcing or balancing relationships.
