Complementarity is a term used in multiple disciplines to describe how two or more elements, when paired, create a complete or more effective whole. It emphasizes interdependence and the idea that certain features or observations become intelligible only in relation to other features, rather than in isolation.

In quantum mechanics, the principle of complementarity, introduced by Niels Bohr, holds that some properties of a system are mutually exclusive depending on the measurement context. For example, light and matter exhibit particle-like and wave-like behavior, but these aspects cannot be observed at the same time; the choice of experimental arrangement determines which aspect is revealed.

In probability and set theory, complementary notions describe how parts fit together. Two events are complementary if they are mutually exclusive and together exhaust all possible outcomes. In set theory, the complement of a subset consists of all elements not in the subset; in linear algebra, the orthogonal or topological complement refers to the set of vectors orthogonal to a given subspace.

In molecular biology, complementary base pairing refers to the specific pairing of nucleobases: adenine with thymine (or uracil in RNA) and cytosine with guanine. This pairing underpins DNA replication and transcription, enabling accurate copying of genetic information.

In economics, complementarity occurs when the demand for one good increases with the consumption of another. Complementary goods, such as printers and ink cartridges, can influence pricing, marketing, and welfare analysis.
