kolonilotter

Kolonilotter are small plots of land allocated to individuals or households for personal horticulture. They are typically organized in koloniföreningar (allotment associations) and managed by volunteers or municipality staff. The plots are usually rented from a landowner, often a municipality, while the association handles allocation, fees and shared infrastructure. Plot sizes vary, commonly ranging from about 100 to several hundred square meters.

Users grow vegetables, fruit, herbs and ornamental plants. The activity is usually seasonal, with the main growing season in spring and summer. Many colonies provide tool sheds, compost areas, water taps and waste facilities. Rules cover soil care, pesticide use, plot maintenance, and boundary fencing. Members are generally expected to maintain their plot and respect neighbours.

Access typically requires joining a koloniförening and paying annual membership and plot rent. There may be waiting lists, and some colonies give priority to local residents or families with children. The social aspect is a feature, with community events, plot exchanges and volunteer work for common areas.

History: Allotment gardens arose in European cities during the 19th and early 20th centuries as a response to urbanization and housing conditions. In Sweden, kolonilotter expanded during the 20th century and remain a common form of urban green space and hobby gardening. They contribute to food production, biodiversity and recreational space in cities.
