It is a simple organic compound consisting of a nitrogen atom bonded to three methyl groups. This substance is commonly encountered in biological systems and industrial applications.

In biological contexts, kolmetiilne is produced primarily through the metabolism of choline, a nutrient found in foods such as eggs, fish, and meat. The enzyme choline dehydrogenase converts choline into betaine aldehyde, which is further oxidized to betaine and then to kolmetiilne by the enzyme betaine-homocysteine methyltransferase. While small amounts of kolmetiilne are naturally present in the human body, excessive production can lead to a condition known as trimethylaminuria, commonly referred to as "fish odor syndrome." This genetic disorder prevents the efficient conversion of kolmetiilne to the less odorous compound trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO), resulting in a persistent body odor.

Industrially, kolmetiilne is used as a precursor in the synthesis of various chemicals, including pharmaceuticals, dyes, and rubber accelerators. It is also employed in the production of quaternary ammonium compounds, which have applications in detergents, fabric softeners, and disinfectants.
