Kogeneraní, also known as combined heat and power (CHP) or cogeneration, is a process that captures and reuses waste heat from electricity generation to produce additional useful heat. This integrated approach significantly improves overall energy efficiency compared to producing electricity and heat separately. In a typical CHP system, a fuel source such as natural gas, biomass, or waste heat is used to generate electricity through a prime mover like a turbine or engine. The waste heat produced during this process, which would otherwise be released into the atmosphere, is then captured by a heat recovery system. This captured heat can be used for various purposes, including space heating, water heating, industrial processes, or even absorption chilling.

The primary benefit of kogeneraní is its enhanced energy efficiency. By utilizing both the electricity and the waste heat, CHP systems can achieve overall efficiencies of 70-90%, compared to the 30-50% efficiency of conventional separate production methods. This higher efficiency translates into reduced fuel consumption and, consequently, lower greenhouse gas emissions.
