The term originates from the Latin *coercere*, meaning "to compel," reflecting the material's ability to resist changes in its magnetic state.

In magnetic materials, koercitivitás is quantified as the coercive field strength, denoted as Hc, which is the magnetic field strength required to reduce the magnetization of a material to zero after it has been fully magnetized. This value is measured in units of amperes per meter (A/m) or oersteds (Oe). Materials with high koercitivitás, such as certain types of steel or rare-earth magnets, retain their magnetization better under external influences, making them suitable for applications requiring durable magnetic properties.
