Knotsealing is a technique used in woodworking and carpentry to fill and seal knots in wood. Knots are natural imperfections in timber where a branch once grew. While they can add character, they can also be weak points, prone to splitting, or may ooze resin, which can interfere with finishes. Knotsealing aims to address these issues by stabilizing the knot and creating a smooth, uniform surface.

The process typically involves preparing the knot by cleaning out any loose debris or resin. Then, a filling material is applied. Common knotsealing agents include epoxy resins, wood fillers, or specialized knot sealers. These are often chosen for their ability to adhere well to the wood and their resistance to the movement of the wood. For larger or more problematic knots, a two-part epoxy might be preferred for its strength and durability.

Once the filler is applied and has cured, the area is sanded smooth to be flush with the surrounding wood. This ensures that the filled knot is no longer a physical or visual disruption. Knotsealing is particularly important when the wood is intended for a clear finish, as it prevents the knot from showing through or discoloring the finish over time. It is also a crucial step in preparing wood for painting or staining, ensuring an even and professional result.
