Klystroniids are a group of extinct, rodent-like mammals that lived during the Paleocene epoch, around 60 million years ago. They were characterized by their primitive dental structure and relatively small body size, often comparable to those of modern-day rodents.

Phylogenetic studies suggest that klystroniids belonged to the order Mammalia, but their exact relationship to other mammalian groups remains unclear. Some research indicates a possible link to the Xenungulata clade, while others propose a connection to the more diverse and widespread Pentaxodontomorpha clade.

One of the most well-known species of klystroniids is Klystronius kleri, discovered in the late 20th century in Paleocene deposits found in the Americas. Specimens of this taxon demonstrate a range of primitive features, including highly multicuspid teeth and a relatively simple dental formula.

Other evidence suggests the existence of additional klystroniid species, perhaps found in regions beyond the Americas. However, due to the incompleteness of the fossil record and the limited scope of current research, these findings remain speculative.

Despite their enigmatic nature, klystroniids have provided valuable insights into the evolution and diversification of mammalian lineages in the early Cenozoic era. Their position as one of the first modern-type mammals to appear after the K-Pg extinction event underscores the complexity of the early paleontological record.
