Klassenloze is the Dutch term describing a society without social classes, where distinctions of wealth, status, power, and life chances are minimized or abolished. In political and sociological discourse, it denotes the aim of achieving equality of opportunity and the elimination of inherited or systemic hierarchical divisions. The term is most closely associated with socialist and communist thought, particularly the Marxist tradition.

In Marxist theory, a klassenloze maatschappij arises after a proletarian revolution and the abolition of private ownership of the means of production. In such a society, the means of production are communally owned, economic decisions are democratically controlled, and exploitation is eliminated. Distribution occurs according to need rather than market position. The state in its most centralized form is said to “wither away” as class antagonisms dissolve.

Historically, the idea has influenced political movements and utopian projects since the 19th century. Some 20th-century states professed to pursue a classless ideal, but many scholars note the persistence of elite groups, bureaucratic rule, and informal hierarchies that undermine equal status. Critics point to economic inefficiencies, reduced incentives, and human rights concerns in attempts to realize a classless order.

In contemporary discourse, klassenloze remains an aspirational concept. Advocates argue for more equal ownership and democratic control of resources, while critics emphasize practical limits and the persistence of power disparities. The term continues to function as a shorthand for debates about inequality, property, and the organization of society.
