Klamydüüdinfektsioon, commonly known as chlamydia, is a sexually transmitted infection caused by the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis. It is one of the most common STIs worldwide. The infection is typically spread through sexual contact, including vaginal, anal, and oral sex. It can also be transmitted from a mother to her baby during childbirth.

In many cases, chlamydia infection has no symptoms, making it difficult to detect without testing. When symptoms do occur, they can vary depending on the site of infection. In women, symptoms may include abnormal vaginal discharge, burning sensation during urination, pain during intercourse, and bleeding between periods. In men, symptoms can include discharge from the penis, burning sensation during urination, and pain or swelling in the testicles. Rectal infections can cause pain, discharge, and bleeding.

Untreated chlamydia can lead to serious health complications. In women, it can cause pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), which can result in chronic pelvic pain, infertility, and life-threatening ectopic pregnancies. In men, chlamydia can lead to epididymitis, an inflammation of the tube that carries sperm, which can also affect fertility.

Chlamydia is treatable with antibiotics. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial to prevent long-term health problems and to stop the spread of the infection. Regular STI screening is recommended for sexually active individuals, especially those with multiple partners or new partners. Condoms can help reduce the risk of transmission, but they do not offer complete protection.
