Cherry trees thrive in temperate climates and require a period of cold weather to properly set fruit. They prefer well-drained soil and full sun. Many cherry varieties are self-pollinating, meaning they can produce fruit without another cherry tree nearby, while others require cross-pollination from a different compatible variety. The wood of cherry trees is also valued for its use in furniture making and decorative veneers.
