A kiinteäkerrosreaktori, or fixed-bed reactor in English, is a type of chemical reactor where a stationary bed of solid catalyst is maintained within a vessel. Reactants flow through this fixed bed, coming into contact with the catalyst, which facilitates the desired chemical reaction. This reactor design is widely used in various industrial processes, particularly in petrochemicals, refining, and environmental control.

The fundamental principle behind a fixed-bed reactor is the intimate contact between the gaseous or liquid reactants and the solid catalyst particles. The catalyst is typically packed into a tube or vessel, forming a porous bed. As the feed flows through the bed, mass transfer occurs from the bulk fluid to the external surface of the catalyst, then diffusion into the catalyst pores, and finally reaction on the active sites. The products then diffuse out of the catalyst and are carried away by the flow.

Advantages of fixed-bed reactors include their simplicity in construction and operation, relatively low cost, and the ability to handle high pressures. They are also effective for reactions with high conversion rates. However, challenges can arise, such as the potential for pressure drop across the bed, hot spots due to exothermic reactions leading to catalyst deactivation or runaway reactions, and difficulty in controlling temperature uniformity. Catalyst replacement or regeneration can also be complex, often requiring a shutdown of the process. Common examples of processes utilizing fixed-bed reactors include ammonia synthesis, catalytic cracking, and the removal of pollutants from exhaust gases.
