Ketonlarn are a class of organic compounds defined by a carbonyl group (C=O) bonded to two carbon-containing substituents. The general structure is R-CO-R', where R and R' may be the same or different. The carbonyl carbon is sp2-hybridized and the C=O bond is polar, giving ketonlarn characteristic reactivity while typically resisting hydrolysis. In systematic naming, ketonlarn are named by replacing the -e ending of the parent hydrocarbon with -one; common names use the alkyl groups followed by the word ketone or the suffix -one, with acetone (propanone) as the simplest member.

Common examples include acetone (propanone), 2-butanone (methyl ethyl ketone, MEK), and cyclohexanone. Ketonlarn are often liquids at room temperature and display moderate to high polarity. They are widely used as solvents because of their ability to dissolve a broad range of organic and inorganic compounds. The solubility of ketonlarn in water decreases as the carbon skeleton grows.

Production methods are diverse. The industrially dominant route is the oxidation of secondary alcohols (for example, isopropanol to acetone). Other routes include oxidation of branched hydrocarbons to aryl or aliphatic ketonlarn and specialized processes such as the cumene process for phenyl ketones.

Reactivity centers on the carbonyl group. Ketonlarn undergo nucleophilic addition to the C=O bond, enabling formation of alcohols, alcohol derivatives, and other products. Reduction yields secondary alcohols; oxidation regenerates the ketone. Grignard reagents add to ketonlarn to give tertiary alcohols after workup, illustrating their role as versatile intermediates in organic synthesis.

Applications span solvents, chemical intermediates, pharmaceuticals, and polymers, while safety and handling depend on volatility, flammability, and toxicology specific to each compound.
