Kelt is a term used in different scientific contexts. In salmonid biology, a kelt is a mature salmon that has spawned and returned to the sea. Kelts are post-spawn fish that may survive their initial spawning and migrate back to the ocean, with some capable of returning to freshwater for additional spawnings in later years. They are of interest to anglers and researchers because their survival, feeding, and potential for multiple spawning events can influence population dynamics and fisheries management. Appearance can be leaner and more faded in color compared to pre-spawn individuals.

In astronomy, KELT refers to the Kilodegree Extremely Little Telescope project, which comprises two small, ground-based robotic surveys designed to detect transiting exoplanets around bright, nearby stars. The KELT-North and KELT-South instruments monitor large numbers of stars for periodic dips in brightness caused by planets passing in front of their host stars. Since the mid-2000s, KELT has contributed to the discovery of several exoplanets and has provided valuable candidates for follow-up observations by larger facilities.
