Kedjeopererad, literally “chain‑operated”, refers to a mechanical system in which motion or power is transmitted primarily through a chain and sprocket arrangement. In this design, one or more rotating sprockets drive a flexible chain that, in turn, imparts motion to a second sprocket or gear. The chain acts as an intermediary link, converting rotational motion from the drive sprocket into motion at the driven sprocket.

The concept emerged in the early 19th century with the development of chain drives for early bicycles and later motorcycles. In the 20th century, chain drives became integral to many small internal combustion engines, such as lawn mowers and chainsaws, as well as to the rear-wheel drive of motorcycles and some cars. Modern improvements in metallurgy, alloy composition, and chain design have extended the lifespan and performance of chain drive systems. Many modern hybrid and electric mobility solutions still employ chain drives for their reliability, especially in low‑speed, high‑torque applications.
