kavandites

Kavandites are a group of minerals described in mineralogical literature as a family of aluminosilicates with a three-dimensional tetrahedral framework and interlayer cations balancing charge. The name is derived from the Kavand region, where the type material was collected, with the standard mineral name suffix -ite.

In terms of structure and composition, kavandites consist of interconnected tetrahedra of silicon and aluminum linked by oxygen to form a rigid lattice. Large cations, such as alkali or alkaline-earth elements, reside in interlayer sites to balance the framework charge. The minerals typically crystallize as clear to pale-colored crystals and show a crystalline habit that ranges from prismatic to tabular, with a vitreous to pearly luster.

Physical properties of kavandites are variable but generally fall within the mid-range for silicate minerals. They are usually described as having moderate hardness on the Mohs scale and a density typical of light silicate minerals. Color can vary depending on trace elements, with commonly reported colors including colorless, yellowish, or brownish tones.

Occurrence and distribution are reported in metamorphic and certain igneous rock settings. Kavandites have been identified in small, localized deposits and are typically associated with other silicates such as mica, feldspar, and zeolites.
