Ultrasonic rangefinders emit sound waves and measure the time it takes for the echo to return after bouncing off an object. The distance is then calculated based on the speed of sound. These devices are generally cost-effective and suitable for short to medium ranges, but can be affected by environmental factors like temperature and humidity, and may struggle with soft or absorbent surfaces.

Laser rangefinders, also known as laser distance meters, use a pulsed laser beam. The device emits a short pulse of laser light towards the target and measures the time it takes for the light to be reflected back to the device. Since the speed of light is constant and known, the distance can be precisely calculated. Laser rangefinders offer high accuracy and can measure over long distances, making them popular in surveying, construction, golf, and hunting applications. Their performance can be affected by atmospheric conditions like fog or heavy rain.
