Katastrofiteoreeman, also known as catastrophe theory, is a branch of mathematics that studies how continuous changes in some parameters can lead to sudden, discontinuous changes in the behavior of a system. It is a qualitative theory, meaning it focuses on the nature of the changes rather than precise quantitative predictions.

The theory was developed primarily by René Thom in the 1960s. Thom showed that for systems with a small number of control parameters (up to four), the possible types of sudden changes, or "catastrophes," are limited and can be classified into seven elementary forms. These forms are named Fold, Cusp, Swallowtail, Butterfly, Elliptic Umbilic, Parabolic Umbilic, and Hyperbolic Umbilic.

Each elementary catastrophe describes a specific way in which a system's equilibrium states can bifurcate or suddenly jump from one stable state to another as the control parameters are varied. The shape of the potential function governing the system's behavior is crucial in determining the type of catastrophe.

Catastrophe theory has found applications in various fields, including physics, biology, economics, engineering, and social sciences. It provides a framework for understanding phenomena where small perturbations can trigger dramatic shifts, such as phase transitions in materials, the sudden collapse of structures, or changes in animal behavior. While powerful as a qualitative tool, its direct quantitative predictions can be challenging to obtain, and its applicability often relies on simplifying assumptions about the system being modeled.
