Karstialueiksi refers to a geographical region characterized by karst topography. Karst is a landscape formed from the dissolution of soluble rocks, such as limestone, dolomite, and gypsum. This dissolution process, typically occurring over long periods, leads to distinctive surface features and underground systems.

Common surface features found in karstialueiksi include sinkholes, which are depressions in the ground formed by the collapse of underlying rock or soil into subterranean cavities. Other visible features can be uvalas, which are larger, coalesced sinkholes, and poljes, which are large, flat-floored depressions often containing temporary lakes or swamps. Disappearing streams and springs are also characteristic, as surface water often infiltrates into the ground through cracks and fissures in the soluble rock.

Underground, karst landscapes are known for their extensive cave systems, stalactites, and stalagmites, formed by the deposition of minerals from dripping water. The hydrology of karst regions is unique, with much of the water flow occurring underground rather than in surface rivers and streams. This can lead to groundwater contamination risks if pollutants are introduced into the karst system.
