A kardánhajtásrúd, commonly known as a driveshaft or propeller shaft, is a mechanical component that transmits torque and rotation from a power source to a driven component. In automotive applications, it typically connects the transmission or transaxle to the differential. This allows for the transfer of power from the engine, located at the front of the vehicle, to the wheels, which are often located further away and may also move up and down with the suspension.

Driveshafts are usually made of steel tubing, but can also be constructed from aluminum or carbon fiber for weight reduction. They are designed to withstand significant torsional stress and bending forces. To accommodate the relative movement between the transmission and the differential, driveshafts incorporate universal joints (U-joints) at each end. These joints allow the shaft to flex and change angle, ensuring continuous power transmission even as the suspension articulates. Some longer driveshafts may also include a sliding joint, which permits axial length changes.

The primary function of a kardánhajtásrúd is to deliver rotational force to the wheels, enabling the vehicle to move. Without this essential component, power could not be effectively transmitted from the engine to the drive wheels in many vehicle designs, particularly rear-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive vehicles. Proper maintenance, including lubrication of the U-joints, is crucial for ensuring the longevity and smooth operation of the driveshaft.
